⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Reim Lunettes
Age: 26
Canon: Pandora Hearts
Canon Point: The party arc, when he used the March Hare to make himself appear dead, thus giving everyone a fucking heart attack during that showdown with the Baskervilles. Thanks Reim

Background:

Here is a Link to the wiki page for the series as a whole. It has some baseline info on the plot and series. The actual wiki for Reim is complete garbage, though, so I'll quickly sum up his background.

What we know about Reim's early life are a few flashbacks and snippets we get from omakes and extras that the Mangaka likes to tease us with. From that we know that Reim's family, the Lunettes, have served the Barma household for generations. They hold the rank of Earl, and Reim's grandfather served as Rufus' personal attendant when he was young and in school.

Reim went to work for the Barma household himself, when he was very young. When he was eleven, he was entrusted with a task from Rufus himself. He was sent to deliver a letter to Sheryl Rainsworth and he was not allowed to return until she gave him an answer.

Sheryl gleefully threw the letter into the fire.

That is how Reim came to live at the Rainsworth estate for two years. In that time, Reim met and fell in love with Sharon, was present for Kevin Regnard, soon to be Xerxes Break, falling out of the abyss and landing, bleeding and dying, in the Rainsworth's mansion. Over the next fifteen years, Reim eventually returned to the Barma household, went on to work at Pandora and became friends with Xerxes Break despite Breaks ...everything.

Personality:

Reim looks like your standard glasses wearing, straight-man. He comes off rigid and manic, tolerating no funny-business while being depressingly easy to fluster. He is that character you expect people to forget about, who ranks low on popularity polls in shounen manga. What sets Reim apart from these other characters is that without Reim, Pandora would be literally burning to the ground. Reim is, in fact, a straight-laced, glasses wearing, pencil pusher, but he is also so ruthlessly competent that without him, the series would have been over far sooner than it was.

From the get go, we see Reim as a very busy, very stressed out member of Pandora. That isn’t because he’s overwhelmed so much as he is trusted with an enormous amount of responsibility. On top of his duties in Pandora, he is also a servant of House Barma, in charge of making that ship sail smoothly not as a personal servant, but as someone who oversees the entire household. Additionally Reim also works alongside House Rainsworth, assisting Lady Sheryl and Lady Sharon when he is needed. In between all that, he takes on tons of smaller menial tasks around Pandora for no reason other than he just wants to see it done properly. He takes it upon himself to check behind cleaning staff, opening windows to air out unused rooms, and to pick up slack in other people's paperwork. This is a man that keeps himself busy to an absurd degree and manages to keep up with it, just fine.

In order to be this competent, it’s important to note that Reim is incredibly intelligent. In order to keep up with all this nonsense as well as be the head house servant for a duke who is infamous for knowing everything, Reim has to have the wits to match. It’s what makes him deadly despite being largely non-combative. In one of these instances, Reim was given a box of letters from Barma with no instruction whatsoever, and figured out a secret message by 1. ordering the letters in chronological order, 2. piecing together a sentence, encrypted in the letters, and 3. translating that sentence from Barma's native language. The resulting message essentially saved all of their lives, just in the nick of time. This spoke incredibly highly of both of Reim's competence and of Barma's trust in Reim's intelligence.

Reim is also the sort of person to try and talk out a solution rather than resort to violence. With his Chain being passive and non-combative, Reim's embraced his strength in negotiations and logistics. However, despite his more passive role, that doesn't keep Reim out of the action. Sometimes handling negotiations means Reim is jumping between two armed parties to stop a fight from breaking out. Rather than people coming to blows, Reim was able in that particular instance to negotiate an alliance between the heroes and the Baskervilles.

However, when talks break down, Reim is absolutely willing to do what has to be done. This is including and not limited to shooting a child point blank in the head with a pistol to keep her from going on to kill more innocents. It's a ruthlessness that Reim isn't especially happy to exert, but one does what one must.

Despite all this stone-cold badassery, Reim is incredibly easy to fluster. He can go from chill to disaster at the drop of a hat, has a fiery temper that will sneak up on you, and enough salt to fill the Dead Sea. When he first met Gilbert it took them exchanging five words for Reim to immediately begin ruthlessly dragging Break while simultaneously giving him a welcoming tour of Pandora Headquarters. He is opinionated and blunt and if he dislikes something or if something is not up to his standards, boy will you fucking know it. Particularly Xerxes Break tends to get the brunt of his nagging and berating and has for the fifteen years they've known each other.

However, when you get down to it Reim is also a very kind and caring person. He is someone who strove to make amends to Lily, the child who he both shot and was nearly killed by. He is someone fiercely loyal to those he loves and is over all a terribly reliable and hardworking person. He shows time and again to pull through situations in the clutch despite odds being wildly out of his favor. He has shown incredible resourcefulness and a willingness to look after his people. Reim didn't hesitate to take a blow to the head from Barma, the boss he's been devoted to his whole life, that was aimed at Break. He also took it upon himself help Break conceal that he'd gone blind by agreeing to take over his paperwork and other tasks that would be impossible for him to accomplish now. All things that he did for the sake of friendship and the people he cares for. He might complain the whole time, but you won’t find a better ally then Reim Lunettes.

Abilities:

Reim is entirely a normal human being, so he possesses nothing extraordinary there. He’s trained in marksmanship, as most Pandora agents are, and isn’t a bad shot.

His true strengths lie in being ruthlessly intelligent, resourceful, and diligent.

Reim also has a Chain, which are creatures members of Pandora can contract with. They come with special abilities unique to them and assist Pandora agents in battle. Reim’s is the March Hare. It’s a non combative chain that grants Reim a deathlike state. He literally can just. Play dead. I know death is kind of a funny thing in Emp so if there’s any restrictions or complications with that let me know.

Alignment:

Thras: There are lots of moments where Reim vacillates between reacting things to abject distress and horror, to moments where he pulls himself together and pushes through terrifying situations with little more than his wits. Existing in a world that's being torn apart by monsters and people wielding destructive supernatural powers and stepping up to help save their world despite having none of that firepower certainly takes a remarkable amount of bravery.
